How Katy Perry got hypnotized to erase the memories of celebrity boyfriends

Can Hypnosis therapy help you mend a broken heart and forget someone?

In the 1958 film version of the musical South Pacific, Mitzi Gaynor sang the number “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair,” after a being dumped by her soldier lover and jilted exes have been tempted to wash their brains of failed relationships ever since. In 2014, it was reported that pop musician Katy Perry went to a hypnotherapist to get over her breakup with blues guitarist John Mayer.

Perry, who sang about finding ETs so hypnotizing, was struggling after charges of infidelity led to her breakup with Mayer. It was reported that Mayer still had a hold on the “Wide Awake” singer. Mayer reportedly hates it when women move on from him and had a reputation for charming his ex-girlfriends, including Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Aniston, into reuniting. Katy is a firm believer in alternative therapies. Sources say Russell Brand’s ex-wife didn’t want to find Mayer attractive anymore. Perry wanted to retrain her brain to prevent taking her ex-boyfriend back.

A source told British magazine Grazia, “Katy was devastated when they broke up. But she is a firm believer in alternative therapies and she wants to wipe him from her life for good, so she decided to see a hypnotherapist. She wants to retrain her brain to prevent John coming back.”

“Katy has been really hurt by John and she doesn’t want him worming his way back in,” a source told Britain’s Grazia magazine at the time. “This time she’s determined to erase him from her life. Her first step was to get him to move all of his belongings out of her home. Katy wants a fresh start and she is well on her way to putting her relationship with John firmly in the past.”

This isn’t the first time Katy Perry has used hypnosis. She reportedly used the treatment after her marriage to comedian Russell Brand ended in 2011. She also reportedly tried hypnosis to quit smoking cigarettes. Perry doesn’t just use hypnotherapy for herself. Katy Perry once credited telepathic hypnosis for helping her tame the wild British comedian.

“I was trying to make him tell me that he wanted to marry me telepathically,” Perry told Star magazine in 2011. Every night we looked into each other’s eyes and I was thinking, ‘Please ask me, please ask me.’ Then, when we finally talked about the idea of getting married, he admitted he was thinking the same – he’d been trying to tell me that I was the woman he wanted to marry by communicating it with his eyes. So all the time we’d been sending each other subliminal messages!”

In the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Jim Carrey tries to get over Kate Winslet with a new medical technology service offered by Lacuna, Inc. that selectively eliminates memory. So far, this technology doesn’t exist. But hypnotherapy can take the power away from repetitive thoughts of loss that strengthen a person’s dependency on their ex-lover.

It is not currently possible to erase a relationship, but hypnosis can help the subconscious mind take away the importance of the memories. Hypnosis can help people disassociate from the memories. During a deeply relaxed state, a person can target negative memories and allow healing by improving self-esteem and confidence. The practice can help people understand what factors might be contributing to the unwanted emotions and help rid them of the behavior related to pain.

The brain is often compared to a computer, but while you can’t delete memories like old photographs, you can hit alt-control-delete to reboot how you see the past. While you can’t be hypnotized to actually forget a past lover, you can use it to see the other person for who they really are, instead of who you want them to be. Instead of erasing the past, you can be hypnotized to love yourself.
